Blogging in Boston - Part Four

Hey, everybody!  It's been a few days since I last blogged, and I need to get you all caught up!  We didn't do too much exploring over the last several days.  We were more just trying to relax at a nice hotel while we could over the weekend before getting back to exploring and Lowell's meetings.

We did end up with an open day yesterday though, and we decided to go back to Salem.  We both really enjoyed it the first time around, and this time it was actually sunny and not raining on us while we explored.  Lowell found a beach for us to check out, so we started our adventure there.

With an old fort on its grounds, Winter Island is more of a campground and park type of destination these days.  You could see into the Salem Port area on one side, and out towards the ocean on the other side.  We walked around it first to see if we wanted to stay there for a bit or go back into town.  Once we saw the beach, we knew we were going to be there for a while.

But before we hit the sand, we walked around the park and just looked out at the lighthouse and the water for a bit.  It was incredible.  We sat there gazing between the rocks, the boats, the water drifting around each bend - honestly, it was just gorgeous to watch.  But, I mean, can you blame us?  Just look at this!

Amazing, right?  No wonder people have chosen to live here for hundreds of years.  I want to live here!  It's beautiful!  Eventually, we stopped staring at the water and decided to actually get into it.  We changed into some swim clothes and made our way down to the beach.

It was stupid cold at first, but it is basically fall now, so that made sense.  We walked around in the water for a bit before I decided to plop down and let the waves crash into me.  It was breathtaking.  Lowell dropped his water bottle in the water for a second and I joked that his water was going to taste salty now.  He didn't believe me, but then he tried to take a drink and he almost spat the water back out.  "I told you so," I said, stifling a laugh.

After a while, we decided to take a drive around the area before the sun set.  We looked at the houses in the area, imagining a life there, then ended up going back to the beach for another hour or two.  We decided we'd leave when the tide got up to our feet.  We started out probably ten feet back, water nowhere near us.  An hour later, the water was smashing into my toes and getting our beach blanket soaked.  Tides are incredible, and I don't think I'll ever really understand how powerful they are.

When we finally left the beach, we found ourselves wandering downtown Salem again.  We went down streets we had missed the first time, looked at shops we hadn't seen before, and we ate those delicious cheese fries at The Village Tavern again.  I had their mac and cheese this time around, and it was pretty good.  I don't know that they actually used four different cheeses like the menu stated - it really didn't taste all that cheesy - but it was still good.

It started to get dark, and we realized we still needed to get checked into our Airbnb that we had booked about 40 minutes away, so we halted our Salem adventure to go take care of that.  I wouldn't be surprised though if we end up back in Salem again.  We both seem to really love it, and we definitely started picturing ourselves living in that area.  Plus, we still have to take one of their spooky walking or trolley tours.  Someday!

More soon!

Amy

P.S. Here's Lowell in a stockade.
